The InterRegio trains with the typical blue window strip were the successors to the express trains of the time. The service introduced by the Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1988 was defined in the train timetable as a supra-regional train with superior comfort. The InterRegio trains ran every two hours, reached an average operating speed of 90 km/h with a top speed of 200 km/h and included a bistro-cafe coach.
