Engelberg is a tranquil spa town in Switzerland, not far from Lucerne. It comes up with an attraction that has caused a sensation worldwide: a cable car that the Swiss considered worthy of being included in the "Swiss Miniature" Park as one of the most important sights in the country. The 45-minute trip up the Titlis is an experience of a special kind. From the gently green valley floor, it leads up into a high alpine glacier world. If you want to get to the summit station at an altitude of 3020 m, you can board the world's first revolving cable car. The rotating gondola floor allows ever new, spectacular views of crevasses, ice breaks and rock formations. Impressive mountain panoramas and, in appropriate weather, unique views change continuously and shorten the 3/4 hour drive. For model railroaders, this is a fantastic opportunity to let their creativity run wild in the design of challenging mountain worlds.
On December 20, 1992, the world’s first rotating aerial cableway, the Rotair, was inaugurated. The idea came from Director Rüegger, inspired by the revolving restaurant Metro Alpin in Saas-Fee. Together with the cableway construction company Garaventa, the vision became reality, creating a technical highlight that continues to delight guests from around the world.
Also in 1992, an important organizational milestone took place for the Engelberg mountain railways: the previously existing 29 lifts and ski lifts, operated by 13 companies, merged to form Bergbahnen Engelberg-Trübsee-Titlis AG (BET AG) — a milestone for the region’s future and a key step towards efficiency and joint development.
