The publicly traded company is one of the largest construction companies in Europe and has its German headquarters in Cologne and an Austrian headquarters in Vienna. Initially, the company began in 1866 under the name Remy und Reifenrath in Herborn and manufactured iron constructions as well as agricultural equipment and machinery - constructed and designed by Reifenrath. As early as 1882, the company owned two steam rollers for road construction as well as agricultural equipment that was loaned out to neighboring communities. In 1923, the Straßenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft Niederlahnstein (Strabag for short) was founded. Just six years later, the company employed about 1400 people and soon moved its headquarters to Cologne. Today, Strabag is active throughout Europe and also has major projects abroad.
