With the merger of Dutch freight operations into the German Railion Group, DB AG acquired several electric locomotives from the NS 1600 series. In 2012, ten of these units were painted in traffic red livery during scheduled maintenance. At the initiative of several train drivers, the last three locomotives were decorated with farewell messages to mark the end of their service with DB Cargo NL in 2020.
