Crossrail was created as a brand name of Swiss railway company Regionalverkehr Mittelland AG (RM) for the operation of unaccompanied combined transport on the transalpine axis Italy – Switzerland – Germany via Simplon – Lötschberg. When the company became independent, it received from Regionalverkehr Mittelland (RM) its five locomotives used for freight traffic, which corresponded to the SBB type class 4/4 III and were procured from the predecessor company Emmental-Burgdorf-Thun-Bahn (EBT). The locomotives had a licence for Switzerland and were retrofitted with ETCS over the years, which is necessary for running freight trains through the Lötschberg Base Tunnel and Gotthard Base Tunnel.
