From 1976, the French State Railways procured a total of 237 BB 7200 multi-purpose locomotives for use on the French DC network. The design of the locomotives with the so-called nez cass (broken nose) was created by the Frenchman Paul Arzens. Some locomotives had special buffers for towing the Talgo III RD trains, which had the capability to change gauges. The buffer body was painted red for identification.
