The tasks of the professional fire brigades of the GDR as well as the mine and oil fire brigades were quite wide-ranging. Independent of the DRK, which is commissioned for civil patient transport and rescue services, the fire brigades took on just such areas of responsibility and had modified KTW with additional medical and medical equipment. This meant that the professional and plant fire brigade commandos also had special vehicles such as RTGW (rescue equipment vehicle), BAW (tyred amphibious vehicle) at their disposal for rescuing and recovering people who had had an accident or drowned in bodies of water, as well as for securing dives.
